Regeneration
The creation of the Stained Glass Centre within the former church of St Martin-cum-Gregory will give a stunning new life to a magnificent building desperately seeking a creative new use. With this comes the exciting opportunity for regular public access to one of York's most beautiful 'lost' buildings, and to see, and have interpreted, its lovely fittings and glass.
It is hoped that the Centre will become a catalyst for the re-awakening of what was once, and could be again, York's most important and elegant street. Residents of central York will be able to reclaim aspects of their own local history, and to participate in, and learn about, craft-skills, arts and industries which continue to play a vital rôle in the life of the city and region.
The Stained Glass Centre is easily accessible on foot and is perfectly placed to be almost entirely accessible by 'green', ecologically responsible transport systems.
—Within five minutes walk of York railway station, which has fast and frequent services to almost all of Britain's major rail centres and is less than two hours travelling time from London.
—York's main centre for local and regional bus transport is only a few hundred yards, with the Centre located on the major Park & Ride bus routes.
—York's celebrated network of cycle routes runs close to the building.
—Guided walking tours of the city will form a regular and important element of the programme of activities.
