Illuminating History

The age-old skill of stained glass making has chronicled and illuminated the great events and issues of human endeavour, from the 7th century to the present day.

The history, artistry and skills demonstrated in the world of stained and painted glass are now to be the focus of a visionary new centre set in the city of York, home to much of Britain's surviving ancient glass and a focus for craft and creativity in the modern day practice of stained glass making.

The Stained Glass Centre will occupy St Martin-cum-Gregory, a beautifully evocative Grade I listed building dating from the 14th century that is ideally situated in the heart of York's historic centre. A contemporary yet sensitive adaptation of this medieval gem will create gallery, workshop and meeting spaces to provide a range of activities for visitors, residents, students, artists and craftspeople.

As well as the rich range of historic glass on display within the building itself, the Stained Glass Centre will provide a unique point of interpretation for the city, with demonstrations, workshops, guided tours, lectures, master classes and professional development courses. These will serve to enthuse the visitor about the world of stained glass making, as well as other associated crafts such as stone and wood carving, letter cutting and metalwork.
